Kevin Muñoz (American, born 1982 in Orange, California, based in Austin, Texas) is a self-taught artist who works in an abstract realm of bright colors and loose textures to explore concepts of identity, longing, and growth. His design background informs his practice, as does his upbringing in Southern California to Guatemalan parents.
Spanning the last five years of the artist’s output and comprising nearly 30 works, this exhibition highlights key moments in Muñoz’s recent body of work and illustrates an evolution in his exploration of abstract painting and the natural world. The latest works were created in response to the past few years of the artist’s life, which has ushered in a significant degree of discomfort and change. As he has endeavored to adapt and evolve, his works now bear the weight of this period. A central theme of the sun and/or moon is still evident in his latest works; however, there is a clear shift from his more conventional yet vibrant illustration of nature towards what the artist refers to as “sun-scapes” or even deconstructed landscapes. While the fundamental essence of a landscape remains key to his works, an abstract quality takes precedence.
